Barclays English Premier League

MU see off Wigan
Afp, Manchester

Wayne Rooney kept Manchester United on course for the Premier League's top spot before being struck down by injury as the European champions secured a tense 1-0 win at home to Wigan on Wednesday.

United can now climb to the top of the table for the first time this season if they win at Bolton on Saturday after Rooney's first minute goal sealed victory against former United centreback Steve Bruce's team.

Although Wigan had arrived at Old Trafford in fine form, having won six of their last seven league games, their record against United was a sorry six defeats from six meetings in the Premier League, so the form book was certainly on the champions' side as they attempted to edge to within two points of leaders Liverpool.

But even so, United's lightning start took the breath away as they opened the scoring inside the first minute when Rooney pounced on Ronaldo's cross from the right flank.

The United winger easily beat his marker on the edge of the penalty area and his cross into the six-yard box was missed by defender Paul Scharner, allowing Rooney to stroke the ball home from close range.

It proved to be Rooney's last involvement in the game, though, with the England forward succumbing to injury just six minutes later.

Ferguson replaced Rooney with Carlos Tevez and the Argentinian forward - whose future at the club is far from secure - should have doubled United's lead after being teed up by John O'Shea midway through the first-half.

O'Shea's header from Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland's clearance freed Tevez thirty yards from goal, but the former West Ham striker over-ran the ball after rounding the keeper and he could only aim his shot into the side-netting.

Wigan did not sit back, however, and they caused United a host of problems through Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia. Valencia, reportedly a January target for Real Madrid and Liverpool, delivered a series of dangerous crosses, but strikers Emile Heskey and Amr Zaki failed to take advantage.

United failed to heed the warning, though, and Wigan were the dominant team early in the second-half as United allowed themselves to drop too deep.

Ryan Taylor and Zaki both had goalbound efforts blocked and Maynor Figueroa forced Edwin van der Sar into a difficult save with a swerving volley from 30-yards on sixty-seven minutes.

When Heskey directed a Valencia cross just wide of the near post seconds later, Ferguson raced to the touchline to berate his under-performing players.

The manager's rallying call went unheeded, however, and United continued to toil away. Fortunately for their title hopes, though, they were able to hold out to claim their fifth 1-0 win in seven league games.

Grameenphone Test Series Bangladesh-Srilanka

Opportunity beckons for Bangladesh
mehedi
Bangladesh coach Jamie Siddons gave a long look at the pitch prior to his charges' practice session ahead of the today's tri-nation final at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.

It's however the same surface where Bangladesh pulled off the scintillating five-wicket victory over their fellow finalists Sri Lanka in the last league match to confirm the final berth.

Siddons would definitely love to see his captain Mohammad Ashraful call the toss correctly again to allow his bowlers to take the early advantage in the foggy conditions.

The Australian however was more concerned with his poor top order batting and it seemed that the Tigers coach was well aware with the fact that it would be unwise to expect special efforts in every match like Shakib Al Hasan and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza did in the last league match to achieve a tough challenge.

Rather there would be need for all the players to play their part and thus respond as a team if the Tigers want to rewrite history by winning the tri-nation tournament as previous record suggests that the Bangladesh goes into long hibernation after one good win.

Which was the reason why despite the victory the Bangladesh coach sounded cautious with the poor top order batting and the poor running between wickets, which has become a new headache for the team. It's too tough for any team to afford the luxury of two to three run outs in every match and the way Tamim Iqbal fell victim of it was really ridiculous.

"May be it happened because of nervousness but we should ensure one thing that we will not lose wickets in the first 20 overs," said Siddons while talking with the reporters yesterday.

The Bangladesh coach however was optimistic about his team's chance in the final. "Hope everything will fall into place tomorrow (Friday)," he hoped.

On the eve of the final the question remains: can Bangladesh win two big matches on a trot to make a history? And Bangladesh captain Mohammad Ashraful had to face the harsh question whether they will take a long leisure after a fine win against Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

"We are not thinking about what we did in the last match rather we want to take it as a new game. It has not happened that we have won two consecutive big matches but it doesn't necessarily mean it will not happen forever," said a confident Ashraful in a pre-match press conference.

"It is a good opportunity for us as we are in the final. Our confidence was down a bit after the first match but we have bounced back with the win against Sri Lanka. If the eleven of us bring our best cricket in the match and do well in all three departments then we can surely hope for a positive result," he added.

He also echoed his coach's sentiment that their top order needs to come out from the poor showing.

"We have to show improvement in the top-order. So far we have not managed a start which is very important. We need to make sure that if one of the top three gets set then he should bat as long as possible. A good start makes the job easier for the next batsmen coming in," Ashraful observed.

"Irrespective of the opposition we play every game to win. We realize that tomorrow we have a genuine chance if we do the process right and stick to the game plan. All of us want this year to be a big year for Bangladesh cricket. We want to compete well with the big teams and get positive results. Tomorrow is an opportunity for us to win a trophy and we are aware of that," he said.

It will be a new history if Bangladesh can lift the trophy but the Bangladesh captain know that in that case they have to prove that they are also 'consistent' sometimes.

BNP pledges to work with govt for nation's progress

From the daily star news

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia yesterday said her party deputies will attend parliament from its inaugural sitting and play a constructive role there. She urged them to lead honest and constructive lives, shunning luxury.

"We hope the government will take the country forward in cooperation with the opposition. We want to assist the government and we want the government creates that atmosphere and maintain it," Khaleda said after a meeting of the BNP Parliamentary Party.

After taking oath in the afternoon, the BNP lawmakers held the meeting at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban and elected Khaleda unanimously as their leader in parliament and decided to send a copy of the decision to Speaker Jamiruddin Sircar to recognise her as the leader of the opposition.

Later at a briefing at Khaleda's Gulshan office BNP Vice-President MK Anwar said the meeting authorised the party chief to pick her deputy in the House, nominate one for the election to the post of deputy speaker and choose lawmakers for other posts including the opposition chief whip and whip.

The significant directive to the lawmakers for leading honest and constructive lives, refraining from luxury, came at the meeting, said a number of lawmakers who attended the meeting.

Khaleda also asked her party deputies to play constructive roles from their respective positions and support the government's good work and oppose the wrong ones, they added.

The BNP chief directed senior MPs of the party to arrange an orientation programme for the new lawmakers so that they can understand their responsibilities in the House.

At the meeting BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury proposed Khaleda Zia's name as the parliamentary party's leader and MK Anwar seconded it. The proposal was passed unanimously.

At the press briefing, Khaleda said party lawmakers would join parliament in the interest of the nation despite knowing about the "massive rigging" in the December 29 parliamentary elections.

Asked if the BNP secretary general will be changed, Khaleda said changes would be brought from the grassroots to the central levels of the party.

On ratifying the 114 ordinances promulgated by the Fakhruddin Ahmed-led caretaker government, Khaleda said they would assist the government on this. "We want that the Awami League will discuss the matter with us because the country and its people are related to it," she said.

About the Awami League's poll pledge to elect the deputy speaker from the opposition, she said, "They promise but deviate from it. We hope they will keep their words...So far they have not given any proposal in this regard. If they give one, we will consider it."

Earlier, outgoing Speaker Jamiruddin Sircar administered oath to 28 lawmakers of the BNP and three of its allies--two of Jamaat-e-Islami and one of Bangladesh Jatiya Party--at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

The oath taking ceremony was not broadcast live by the state run Bangladesh Television although it had aired live the oath taking of the lawmakers of all parliamentary parties including those in the AL-led grand alliance.

In a reaction to this, the BNP chief said, "The people will understand from this discriminatory attitude of the government that its words and deeds do not go together."

Khaleda alleged that 17 of her party leaders and workers have been killed so far in the AL's post-poll violence. "From the home minister's comment on this it is clear where the government wants to take the country," she said.

"The government has created this chaotic situation to divert people's attention from its poll pledges," she added.

Before taking oath, Khaleda retained Feni-1 seat, vacating Bogra-6 and 7 seats.

Taking oath, the opposition lawmakers promised to discharge their duties faithfully and have faith in and allegiance to Bangladesh. They also pledged not to allow personal interests to affect their duties.

The Parliament Secretariat handed them copies of the constitution, rules of procedure of parliament, and remuneration and allowances order.

In the latest battle of ballots, BNP faced a humiliating defeat and got only 29 seats, which is the lowest number of seats the party has won in any national election since 1979.

Political analysts blamed the election debacle on unbridled corruption and misrule by the ministers and lawmakers of the BNP-led alliance in their five-year tenure.

To keep a happy balance, focus on relevance and make sure that you’re not overloading your blog with too many ads. It should go without saying that you should absolutely not use every single one of these ad programs, either.
