Kasey Matthews didn't think she would be taking to the dance floor this prom season, as her ongoing battle with leukemia has kept her in the hospital for the past several weeks.

But on Thursday, the Riverside teenager left her hospital bed for the annual Night of Stars patient prom at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She was one of about 85 patients to attend the event that transforms parts of the hospital into a party place.

"It was awesome. I didn't really know what to expect, but as it got closer I was so excited," Kasey said. "I felt like I was going to explode. I've never been to a school dance or anything this big before."

The 16-year-old traded in her comfy lounge clothes for a floor-length cream gown with pretty beading. She got her nails and makeup done before taking to the red carpet.

Kasey skipped the fancy hairdo and instead donned a pink glow-in-the dark band around her bald head. And she didn't let her wheelchair keep her off the dance floor.

"I danced the best I could in my chair. It was so much fun," she said Friday from her hospital room at CHOP. While her first big dance was different than she ever imagined, it may have been just what the doctor ordered.

"I had a headache for days and today it's a little bit better. I think it might have helped," Kasey said.

While Kasey looked as pretty as a princess in her gown and earrings, she is really a fighter.

Four years ago, she was diagnosed with acute lymphatic leukemia.

"I wasn't feeling well," she said. "I was tired all the time and looked pale and they thought it was just teen laziness. But then my lips got real pale and we knew we had to see a doctor."

A high fever led to blood work. Kasey recalled the 6 a.m. phone call her mom got from the doctor after he received the results. He told them to get to the hospital. When Kasey's mom woke her up, the little girl feared things to come.

"Is it cancer?" she asked. Doctors would soon confirm Kasey's suspicions.

"It was like a punch in the stomach," she said of hearing her diagnosis. "It took the wind right out of me."

The JFK Presidential Library gives a Profile in Courage Award to public officials who took a stand that took a lot of integrity and nerve. Two of the laureates for 2009 who are being honored are, fittingly enough, Sheila Bair and Brooksley Born, two public servants whose courage has embarrassed three administrations including the current one. The Kennedy Library deserves its own profile in courage award for providing the exclamation point.

    porn island

Fire-breathing dwarves, topless dancers, high wire acrobats and a live porn show at dawn - despite Bacchanalian competition, one Ibizan club has managed to remain the most riotous night on the White Isle.

The Mediterranean pleasure palace of Manumission has become legendary within the clubbing fraternity - the ultimate getaway for Britain's hordes of party animals who have flocked to the Spanish island in their thousands every year since the veterans of the UK acid house scene fled their industrial urban warehouses in the early-1990s.

But this summer a hedonistic hole will be left in Ibiza's clubbing scene following the news that, for the first time since it was established, Manumission will not open its doors.

Andy and Mike McKay, the two Mancunian brothers who set up the famous club night back in 1994, have remained mysteriously circumspect over why they will no longer be putting on the weekly dance night which cost £200,000 (NZ$518,000) to stage, regularly attracted up to 10,000 clubbers and is recognised by Guinness World Records as the world's biggest party.

    bbc

The British Broadcasting Corporation, almost always referred to by its abbreviation "the BBC",[1] is the world's largest broadcaster.[2] Unlike other broadcasters in the UK, it is a public service based, quasi-autonomous, statutory corporation run by the BBC Trust. In common with the public broadcasting organisations of many other European countries, it is funded yearly by a television licence fee charged to all UK households which own a television capable of receiving broadcasts, rather than being underwritten directly by the Government of the United Kingdom.

BBC World, its journalism arm, has bases or correspondents in more than 200 countries and, as officially surveyed, is available to more than 274 million households, though also possibly far more individual persons and groups than surveys can gather, and it is the oldest surviving entity of its kind. The BBC's reach is significantly more than CNN's estimated 200 million.

    sex

Sex is a highly designed coffee table book written by Madonna with photographs by Steven Meisel and film frames taken from film shot by Fabien Baron. Sex was released on October 21, 1992 by Warner Books. The book was released by Madonna as an accompaniment to her fifth studio album Erotica, which was released a day earlier (October 20, 1992).

The extremely controversial book featured strong adult content and softcore pornographic photographs depicting simulations of sexual acts, which included homosexuality, sadomasochism, and anilingus. Madonna wrote the book as a character named Mistress Dita, inspired by the silent film actress Dita Parlo.

Featured in the book, aside from unknown models, are actress Isabella Rossellini, rappers Big Daddy Kane and Vanilla Ice, model Naomi Campbell, gay porn star Joey Stefano, actor Udo Kier, the European socialite Tatiana von Furstenberg, and nightclub owner Ingrid Casares.

For the release of Sex Madonna gave a party at New York City's Industria Superstudio, which she attended dressed as Little Bo Peep with a stuffed toy lamb.

Aside from Steven Meisel himself, photographers from his studio were also employed. The book credits Michael Stratton, Darren Lew, Line Barzudkas, Stephen Callaghan and Chris Hobson. Fabien Baron, one of the book's designers, also shot many of the photo sessions on film (mostly on Super 8 mm). Many stills from Baron's film were used in the book. Filming was done entirely on Super 8mm, and the filmmakers were Fabien Baron, Stephen Callaghan, and Darren Lew.

    cnn

Cable News Network, almost always referred to by its initialism CNN, is a major U.S. cable news network founded in 1980 by Ted Turner.[1][2] Upon its launch, CNN was the first station to provide 24-hour television news coverage,[3] and the first all-news television network in the United States.[4] While the news network has numerous affiliates, CNN primarily broadcasts from its headquarters at the CNN Center in Atlanta, the Time Warner Center in New York City, and studios in Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles. CNN is owned by parent company Time Warner, and the U.S. news network is a division of the Turner Broadcasting System.[5]

CNN is sometimes referred to as CNN/U.S. to distinguish the North American channel from its international counterpart, CNN International. Its news gathering resources are second only to Britain's BBC News in the number of employed news journalists and worldwide news bureaus.[6][7] As of June 2008, CNN is available in over 93 million U.S. households.[8] Broadcast coverage extends to over 890,000 American hotel rooms,[8] and the U.S broadcast is also shown in Canada. Globally, CNN programming airs through CNN International, which can be seen by viewers in over 212 countries and territories.[9]

The first CNN broadcast went live on June 1, 1980.[4] By providing around-the-clock news reports and updates, the network became an alternative to the traditional morning and evening news cycle that had dominated television news since its inception.[4] CNN gained further prominence with its exclusive live coverage of the Gulf War in 1991, which brought global attention to the network.[4][8] A sister channel, Headline News (originally called CNN2), launched in 1982, and CNN International debuted in 1985. Since CNN's debut, more than 70 television networks have launched with 24-hour news coverage.[3]

In terms of unique viewers (Nielsen Cume Ratings), CNN rates as America's number two cable news network,[10] and is ranked number two behind Fox News in total audience Nielsen ratings.[11] Among cable viewers, CNN has a more moderate or centrist audience,[12][13] as opposed to Fox News, regarded as catering to more conservative viewers,[12][14] or MSNBC, which has been accused of leaning left.[15][16][17]

CNN was the first of the Big 3 United States cable news channels to launch in HD, doing so in September 2007.[18] As a comparison, Fox News Channel did not launch in HD until May 1, 2008, [19] and MSNBC HD will not launch until June 29, 2009. [20] CNN was also the first channel to use hologram technology on television, it did so during the 2008 United States Presidential Election on November 4, 2008. CNN's Jessica Yellin became the first person ever to be transmitted via hologram, followed by Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas. [21]

CNN's main slogan is "The Most Trusted Name in News."[22]

    bbc news

Get the latest BBC World news: international news, features and analysis from Africa, Americas, South Asia, Asia-Pacific, Europe and the Middle East.

BBC News, formerly BBC News and Current Affairs,[1] is the department within the British Broadcasting Corporation responsible for the corporation's news-gathering and production of news programmes on BBC television, radio and online.

Producing 120 hours of output daily,[2] it is the largest broadcasting news gatherer in the world[3]. It maintains its key objective of the BBC's Royal Charter to "collect news and information in any part of the world and in any manner that may be thought fit".[4][5]

Political coverage is based at the Millbank Studios in 4 Millbank in Westminster.[6] With an annual budget of £350 million, BBC News consists of 3,500 staff - 2,000 of whom are journalists.[3] The core BBC News department is based at the News Centre within BBC Television Centre in West London, W12, and is also represented by regional centres across the United Kingdom. The service's global reach is the largest and deepest of any of its kind in the world: there are correspondents in almost all 240 countries worldwide, with 44 news-gathering bureaus based around the world. There are also three BBC News bureaus based within the UK.[3]

Unlike almost all other countries' news organs, the BBC is a quasi-autonomous organisation and does not ally itself politically with the Government of the United Kingdom, though it does pay occasional respects to its Queen. It has however been accused of left-wing bias by right-wingers and right-wing bias by left-wingers, and has sometimes opposed UK Government policy, such as its accusation in 2005 that the administration was "sexing up" the war in Iraq.

Competition within the UK comes mainly from Rupert Murdoch's rolling news channel Sky News, but there is also the independent ITN, a major independent provider of news services to commercial networks. Around the world the BBC complements other news providers' services, as well as has its own.

Some countries have restricted or banned BBC broadcasts and journalists' movements for internal political reasons, forcing correspondents to report on events in those countries from neighboring countries.

BBC News is currently headed by Helen Boaden.

    weather

Rain is moving into Orlando today, with scattered showers and thunderstorms predicted this afternoon.

The weather Sunday will be mostly cloudy, with high temperatures near 87 degrees. Southeast winds will be between 5 and 10 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service in Melbourne.

The likelihood of rainy weather will increase early in the week, with a 60 percent chance of precipitation on both Monday and Tuesday.

The threat for fires is low today, but lightning strikes could spark new wildfires due to very dry ground conditions, the National Weather Service said. At east Central Florida beaches, there is a moderate risk of rip currents.
